Solution:-

  The solution to all your worries is here!  Simply place 256Colour in
  your WBStartup drawer.  Upon running it,  it will check the depth of
  your Workbench screen.   If the number of colour is equal or smaller
  than 8,  then  it will  quit safely.   If the  number  of colours is
  greater than 8,  then it  will read in the final four colours in the
  palette,  and re-write  them to the correct colour index's, enabling
  both 3 bit and 8 bit icons to look their best.

  I would advise  anyone who  uses this  program to  edit all of their
  multi-colour  icons so  that they  are 3 bits and not 8,  since they
  take up quite a lot of room :(    A good icon editor I would suggest
  to use is the latest version of Iconian.
